City celebrates one year of Skyline Segment 2 operations

HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) is proud to mark one year of operations for Skyline Segment 2, a major milestone for the nation’s first fully automated, elevated rail transit system.
One year ago, on October 16, 2025, Skyline Segment 2 opened its doors for passengers, adding four new stations and five additional miles of service. The expansion strengthened connections to major employment centers and destinations, including Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Māpunapuna, and the Kalihi Transit Center at Middle Street. Since then, the system has provided over 6 million rides through its 13 stations, connecting East Kapolei and Kalihi while improving access to jobs, schools, businesses, and key destinations across the island.
“What an incredible year it has been for Skyline. More than 6 million rides, record ridership, and a system that continues to operate with better than 99 percent reliability. These are tremendous accomplishments, and we are just getting started,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “From the beginning, I have said Skyline would be a game changer for our island, and we are seeing that vision become reality. As we continue building toward Downtown Honolulu and the Civic Center, we are creating opportunities to connect our communities, strengthen our economy, and improve the quality of life for generations to come. I am incredibly proud of the people who have worked so hard to get us to this point, and I am excited about what lies ahead.”
Since Segment 2 opened, support for Skyline has grown tremendously, and ridership has increased to nearly 13,500 weekday rides, with service reliability above 99%.
Additionally, Skyline recorded its highest ridership to date on both a weekday and a weekend in recent months. Weekday ridership reached a record 14,143 rides on August 26, while weekend ridership peaked at 14,192 rides on September 12 during Megabon.
Skyline’s achievements have also earned national recognition, including the 2026 American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Innovation Award. The award recognizes Skyline’s innovative use of technology to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation.

“The success of Skyline’s second segment reflects the growing role that Skyline plays in connecting our communities and providing more convenient access to jobs, schools, and essential destinations”, said DTS Director of Transit Jon Nouchi. “Surpassing 6 million rides and setting new ridership records are significant milestones, and the national and international recognition from our peers and leadership at APTA reinforces the value of investing in innovative, reliable transportation. As we look ahead to Segment 3, we remain focused on expanding these connections and building a more accessible and sustainable transportation network for Oʻahu.”
Construction is currently underway on Segment 3, which will extend service from Middle Street to Iwilei, Chinatown, Downtown Honolulu, and the Civic Center in Kakaʻako. Each new segment brings Oʻahu closer to a more connected, convenient, and sustainable transportation future.
Skyline’s success has been driven by growing ridership, expanded service, and consistently reliable operations. As the system grows, it will provide even greater mobility while supporting housing, economic development, and a more sustainable future for Oʻahu.
The City appreciates Skyline riders, employees, and community partners whose support has contributed to Skyline’s success. As construction continues and new segments open, Skyline will keep moving Oʻahu toward a more connected, sustainable transportation future.
