PACOM Mortuary Affairs Symposium Strengthens Readiness Across the Pacific

FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii— U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) G4 Mortuary Affairs team hosted the PACOM Mortuary Affairs Symposium at headquarters, Sept. 14-18, bringing together Mortuary Affairs professionals, Department of War and Joint personnel, and Partner Nation representatives to identify readiness gaps, examine emerging requirements and develop solutions for Mortuary Affairs operations in large-scale combat operations.

The weeklong symposium focused on Army tactical-level Mortuary Affairs readiness, unit recovery team modernization, expeditionary preservation of human remains, and autonomous search and recovery capabilities.

“We identified significant tactical readiness shortfalls,” said Master Sgt. Dimitry Razell, USARPAC Senior Mortuary Affairs noncommissioned officer. “Across the force, our Four Victor personnel are not fully trained for their positions.”

The symposium also highlighted the need to expand the theater’s ability to preserve human remains in an expeditionary environment.

“Expeditionary preservation of human remains is a key requirement for the theater,” Razell said. “We need to purchase, manufacture and pre-position that equipment at our theater Mortuary Affairs points.”

Razell said the capability will also be critical in Okinawa to ensure Mortuary Affairs forces can support operations throughout the region.

The symposium provided an opportunity for participants to examine current capabilities, identify gaps and synchronize modernization efforts across the Mortuary Affairs enterprise.

“Our modernization and innovation priorities focus on equipment modernization, expeditionary capabilities, autonomous and emerging technologies, and interoperability with partners,” Razell said.

Moving forward, the enterprise will focus on closing training shortfalls, prioritizing expeditionary embalming capabilities at theater Mortuary Affairs points and in Okinawa, accelerating MACRS redevelopment, and resourcing additional MORTS devices throughout the theater.

The symposium reinforced the importance of maintaining a ready, adaptable Mortuary Affairs enterprise capable of supporting Soldiers and commanders across the Pacific during competition, crisis and large-scale combat operations.

As the Army prepares for the demands of the modern battlefield, Mortuary Affairs professionals across the Pacific are identifying gaps today, modernizing capabilities for tomorrow, and ensuring the Army is prepared to honor and care for its fallen wherever the mission takes them.
